Continued from Upgrading My Hosting From Reseller To VPS Part One
Once my private nameservers were working I made back up files of all of my sites and I made a list of the sites that I wanted moving, complete with passwords. I sent that list to Hostgator and went to bed.
The next day my sites were all up and running, it had only taken a few hours to transfer my sites. I found that I hadn’t needed to allocate hosting plans to any of the sites, they were just moved with them, though I did change some of them because of updating needs. I was also pleased to see that the stats in my cpanel were still there because I had expected them to start afresh.
So to me it looked as if the move from reseller hosting account to VPS within the same company was more as if they had lumped the whole caboodle of 30+ sites and blogs into one parcel and duplicated it onto a second server rather than move them bit by bit. The sites were still available on the reseller account until I had checked out the moved sites and once I found there were no problems I filled in a form to close the reseller account.
Whether it was me that didn’t read the instructions properly or whether they weren’t clear enough I don’t know but I did mess up at one point. I checked one of my money sites, found it was working ok and deleted it off the reseller account. OMG it deleted off the VPS account too. As I was expecting this site to really go some in sales at this time of year I was mortified and tried to set it up again from the back up but I was clueless.
I contacted Hostgator and explained my predicament and a very nice young man found the copy that they had and put it back online for me. That was when I found at that I shouldn’t delete anything on the old server, just let Hostgator do it when you are ready and have filled in their form.
The next problem that I had was also my doing. I was watching TV and checking out my top niche blog at the same time and there was a WordPress and several plugin updates. I did the updates and clicked on a theme update without thinking and disaster again. The theme is one of those with a lot of design options and it had taken me hours to get it just right and design a header round it. The update didn’t keep my options as usually happens when you update themes so my blog looked a complete mess and shortly before Christmas when I was expecting it to get a lot of visitors.
I didn’t have the time or inclination to sort the theme out, so I replaced it with an old theme that I hadn’t removed from the theme area and contacted Hostgator knowing that they would have a back up. I offered to pay for the site restoring to how it had been but they did it free of charge because of my upgrade and in plenty of time for Christmas. The big day got my blog over 8,000 visitors and was the icing on my Christmas cake.
Another thing that I forgot to do on some of the sites was change the nameservers, that’s because my domains are with 3 different registrars and after changing them on the first 2 registrars I got busy and forgot about the other 2 for a few days until I noticed that there were no sales coming from them when they should have been busy. Not paying attention to the details can cost you money!
Now after a few weeks of the upgrade I can’t say that I have noticed any difference in loading speed yet. My article directory hasn’t been suspended for causing an overload yet as it was several times on the reseller account. So hopefully everything will be fine for 2011 and hopefully you will not make the same mistakes that I made when upgrading my hosting.
